The year 2015 (running account)
January 2015
- Pope Francis visits the Philippines from Jan 15 to 19. His visit creates a major impact on public opinion as reflected in mass media and reactions from various institutions and prominent personalities.
- Special Action Force (SAF) units of the PNP conduct a top-secret operation to arrest two persons linked to mujahid terrorism in Mamasapano, Maguindanao. On Jan 25, the SAF units get their prey but are trapped in a counter-operation by units of the MILF and the BIFF. A total of 44 SAF members are killed. In the next months all through 2015 and 2016, the 2015 Mamasapano incident fuels a major controversy that deeply shakes the Aquino government because the many irregularities in the whole operation directly involve Pres. Benigno Aquino III himself, suspended PNP chief Alan Purisima and other civilian, police and military officials as well as the shadowy role of US operating forces.
- Mindanao is rocked by two major bombings: on Jan 14 in Maguindanao and on Jan 23 in Zamboanga City.
- At the Panatag Shoal, on Jan 22, at least 24 Chinese vessels are seen collecting giant clams in the shoal's lagoon. On Jan 29, the Philippine Coast Guard reports that 3 Philippine-flagged vessels were rammed by a Chinese Coast Guard Vessel. The Philippines' DFA files two protest notes with China on Feb 4.
February 2015
- The SC affirms on Feb 3 the unconstitutionality of the controversial DAP. Also through February, at least two public officials surrender to the authorities on charges of involvement in the related PDAF scam.
