  • May. Juan de Salcedo, grandson of Miguel de Legazpi, explores the Ilocos coast and learns the richest gold mines are in the interior. (Scott 1975, 115)

  • Martin de Goiti collects tribute of 474 kilograms of gold from Ilocos and Pangasinan, which are reported to be the richest provinces because of their trade with mountain peoples called Igorot and Zambal. (Scott 1975, 115)

Juan de Salcedo, with headquarters in Vigan, is ordered to send samples of gold from Ilocos and Pangasinan for comparison. He discovers local mines. (Scott 1975, 115)
